You Better Know Why
May 25th
“Why do you want to work at ______________?”
This question is most important because a Hiring Manager cannot predict your answer from your resume or previous experience.
Your answer should be unique while showing you have done your research about the company.
How to nail this question:
- The reason you want to work at the company should complement your strengths.
- While researching the brand pay close attention to its growth and movement throughout the industry during past years. Think about how you can contribute to its success and what new and innovative ideas you can bring to the table.
- Make a list of obvious answers and DON’T USE THEM. Guaranteed the five people who interviewed before you gave the same answer. Make it a point to stand out among the rest.
Have anything to add or comments to provide? Please let us know and leave your thoughts.

Monday’s Mentionings – am New York
May 16th
Today’s am New York points out useful information when attending jobs fairs. Cathryn Vandewater lists five important facts to remember to make the most of your job fair visit.
Our favorite points of mention are:
- Don’t hold back
- Job Fairs are a revolving door. Think about the prospective candidates that have been practicing their speeches for days. Don’t be a robot. Make eye contact, smile, and talk about the company and why you would be a good fit. No hiring manager wants to speak with a broken record.
- Get Personal
- Not holding back also means delving deeper into the company and speaking about recent news and changes within the company. Research the jobs fair’s website to see which vendors will be attending.
- Eat, Sleep, and Be Merry
- Rest up and eat before the fair so you’re not low on energy. You never know who will be watching you drag your feet around from table to table. Be upbeat, smile, and shake everyone’s hands!
- Short and Sweet
- Make sure you follow up. Include the fair where you met and a brief recap of what you discussed.
Do you have any questions about attending your next job fair? Comment and we will answer.

Revive Your Job Search This Summer
May 11th
If you find that you have been job searching for months and are looking forward to some down time this summer, don’t let the warm weather, beach fun, and enticing vacations tear you away from continuing on your path to success.
If your search has become monotonous follow these five steps to a job search revival.
- Switch It Up
- Change your routine. For example, if you exercise in the morning before you start your search try changing the time until after your daily search is over, or during your lunch break.
- Add-Ons
- Find some volunteer work for the summer months. Get outdoors, meet new people. Volunteer work is great to add to the vacant months on your resume.
- Network More
- With warm weather comes dining outside! Invite some old colleagues and industry folk out for happy hour, lunch, or dinner outside.
- Change Location
- If you’re used to conducting your job search in your home – leave! If you are not close to Wi-Fi make a plan to draft emails or even hand written notes outside for some fresh air and a change of atmosphere.
- Walk It Off
- Instead of sending resumes via snail mail walk your documents over to the office building and drop it off by hand. Not only will you get some exercise but you will also save money!
Do you have any other ideas for amping up your summer search? Please share!

No Doubt App-Out It
May 5th
We are always looking for innovative, fresh new ways to apply for jobs and network. Heather Mundell, Life and Career Coach, gives some great pointers on her blog, Life@Work.
Free apps on your smart phone, iPhone, or Tablet are great tools to accessing and applying for jobs on the go.
Job Boards that have phone applications include:
- Monster
- Career Builder
- LinkUp
- Indeed
There are also some dashboards you can download for free like TweetDeck and Hootsuite. These dashboards make all your social media sites reachable from one place.
If you’re not app savvy try downloading one app at a time to get familiar with the interface. Don’t overwhelm yourself – searching for a job is hard enough. Good luck and comment if you have questions!
