Guidelines to Follow Now That You Have a New Job
Sep 7th
You did it! You landed a new job and you couldn’t be happier. Odds are you’re a somewhat nervous though. Well that’s natural. You want to leave a positive first impression on your new boss and colleagues without making any rookie mistakes.
Here are several “don’ts” to avoid when starting a new job:
- Don’t show up late
- Don’t dress unprofessionally
- Don’t expect hand-holding
- Don’t ask co-workers to do your work
- Don’t take too many personal calls
Once you’ve settled into your new job you shouldn’t stop trying to impress. According to a study from Wynhurst Group, ‘22% of staff turnover happens in the first 45 days of employment’. Make sure you don’t become too complacent, allowing you to become victim of this statistic.
There are several keys to keeping your new job. Be sure you clarify your goals and learn if there is a training system in place for new employees. It doesn’t hurt to be proactive and ask for a review after a few months of working. This shows initiative and that you’re really interested in the company. Building relationships is crucial. Often times you will find yourself having to collaborate with others for projects and having a solid rapport can prove to be beneficial and make the project run smoothly. Just be yourself and show your commitment. The rest will come naturally.

Culture Fit
Nov 18th
Almost everyone has heard, “I’m sorry we went with another candidate. Thank you for taking the time to explore the opportunity.”
This statement is filled with many different meanings depending on the situation, of course.
One situation that we’d like to reference in particular: You weren’t a culture fit.
What does this mean?
When a company is searching for the “perfect candidate” there is a lot to consider. Some specific qualifications include image, professional background, and personality – all of which fall under the “culture fit” category and must meet the company’s standards.
How can you ensure that both you and the company are a fit for one another?
We have found a great source of questions to help you answer this questions.
- Do your values match the company? Review the mission statement and “about us” on the company website. The best way to go about answering this question is to chat with current employees that already work with the company. Connect with them on LinkedIn and explain that you are exploring opportunities with the company and wish to learn more about their experience.
- Does management have an open door policy? Is there fluid communication throughout the office and its employees?
- Is there growth within the company? Again, use LinkedIn as a search. Scan the employee’s time spent at the company and if they’ve been promoted.

Office Observations: Bond, Must Bond
Sep 15th
When you start at a new job befriending co-workers can be intimidating. A majority of bonds have already been formed and you’re either sitting on the edge of newbie and “are you cool enough?” Let’s be honest, high school never ends.
Most of your energy should be spent proving yourself to your new boss but spending time on making friends isn’t against the rules. Just make sure to use your time wisely by befriending the following:
1. The Face
The receptionist is the first and last person you see. Chances are she is the eyes and ears of the company, relaying all that she sees and hears to your boss. Take a step in the right direction and befriend the receptionist.
2. Signed Sealed Delivered
The person who is in charge of messengers, mail, packages, and items that are time sensitive and important should be part of your fave five.
3. Early Bird Special
The seniors and authoritative figures in the company are great to bond with as mentors and windows into the company. Begin to form strong relationships with these people in the early stages of your career in hopes of creating a strong support system.
4. Newbies
You won’t always be the new person and as my grandmother always said, “Do unto others as you would have others do unto you.”
5. Learn From The Intern
Your interns are not slaves. (As some of us soon forget once there are two extra hands around.) Interns are there to learn, gain experience, and soak up all the knowledge you have to offer. Interns are usually younger with a better grasp on things like social media and any and all hot topics. Learn from your intern. Treat them well because you never know when you will cross paths again. It is a small world, after all.
It’s not easy starting a new job and it’s hard to find a tight support group in an unfamiliar work environment. Follow these steps to a smooth initiation. Good luck!
