How to Work with a Recruiter
Mar 18th
A serious investment requires the inside knowledge and advice of someone experienced. If you wanted to buy a house, you probably wouldn’t just look at pictures on the internet and make a blind purchase. You want someone who can tell you about a faulty foundation, who your neighbors are and what’s great about the house that you might not realize on your own. That’s why home buyers use a realtor.
Job-seekers use a recruiter for the same reason.
Unlike a realtor, a recruiter provides a range of services completely free of charge. A good recruiter can present you with multiple opportunities at different companies that you wouldn’t find on your own.
Developing relationships with recruiters can be advantageous, as they may think to contact you whenever they land a job search assignment that matches your background. But don’t wait until you’re ready to change jobs to get to know recruiters. Like with most relationships, building good ones can take time.
Here are some tips for getting started:
Tell the Truth
Be honest about what kind of job you’re looking for, and be honest about whether you’re interested in a job you’re pitched. If you’re not interested, say so. This will help refine the kinds of jobs you are approached with. If you’re employed, only offer yourself to recruiters if you’re serious about changing jobs.
Talking to a recruiter can help you define career goals before you go in for an interview. They will help you prep before an interview so you know what your goals are, how they align with what the company wants and how you can sell yourself. A recruiter will not send you on an interview unless they believe you are qualified for the job, which should also give you some confidence once you’re there.
Set Boundaries
Some job hunters say they’ll take any position they want when they don’t really mean it. Make sure you are upfront with your recruiter about geographic locations, salaries or companies that are off limits for you. At the same time, you don’t want to narrow your boundaries so much that you miss great opportunities.
One great benefit of working with a recruiter is that they will help negotiate salaries for you. For most people, this can be hard to do on your own. Know what your limits are when it comes to salary in order to make this easier for the recruiter.
Show up for Interviews
If for some reason you have to cancel after you are granted an interview, make sure you let your recruiter know. Not showing up for an interview will damage your reputation with the recruiter and will ensure that you are not approached with further opportunities.
Explain Your Rejections
If you’re approached with a job that isn’t a good fit, explain why. Is the pay too low? Are the hours too weird? Do you not like the company? Explain your reasoning so that the recruiter won’t approach you with similar positions, and will approach you with positions that are a better fit.
Check In and Be Patient
If you’re waiting to hear about a position, be patient, but check in with your recruiter every so often if you don’t hear back.
Stay in touch with recruiters so you can stay on their radar and build a relationship. This will increase your chances of being approached with opportunities further down the line.

Facebook – The New Recruiting Network?
Feb 4th
With the creation of the Facebook Graph Application, Mark Zuckerburg has proved that Facebook can compete with any social media platform, including LinkedIn. Last Tuesday, the company announced the introduction of a search tool that will allow people to connect by interest and location. This tool is going to be a huge asset for human resources and recruiters alike. Danny Rubin at the Huffington Post purports the example of a potential employer seeking out an employee who is fluent in French. The Graph Application allows this employer to search for a fluency in French within a Facebook profile. The employer could filter to have the search include ‘friends of friends’ or ‘friends of co-workers’. Predictions indicate this tool will be extremely useful because it allows employers to use their own immediate networks (which they already trust the most) to find a great hire.
Now that you know your Facebook profile could be analyzed in the near future by human resource departments, it may be time you made changes to increase your chance of a hire. Because the tool connects via pre-existing networks, it is important that you think critically before you delete your friends. Your friends can connect you to their networks which will allow for an increase in the number of people that can search for you. This makes sense if you think of Facebook as a new networking opportunity. The logic is don’t burn unnecessary bridges. Another way to increase your potential hire appeal is to make sure you list your full job title. You have to let these companies be aware of your experience in say photography or graphic design. If it is an applicable skill, go ahead and list it in your about me section. The next tip is to make sure your ‘like’ section is filled with companies you would like to connect with. However, this section could be used against your social profile if what you have chosen to like is damaging to your image. Basically, resist the urge to like anything profane or controversial. If you do feel the need to keep some of your more questionable interests or likes then Mashable suggests that you make sure you are adjusting your privacy settings accordingly.
Prior to launching this application, Facebook put up a Job Board search as part of its Social Jobs Partnership Initiative along with the U.S. Department of Labor Initiatives. It doesn’t stop there. Did you know Facebook right now has a plethora of job search applications for job seekers? For example, Be Known is Monster’s Facebook application that will update you with job and internship postings. There is an application called Business Cards which enables users to create personalized messages like a virtual business card that will sync with your Facebook profile. There are also applications like Hire My Friend that lets you to promote your job seeking friends. Furthermore, there are informational applications like Salary that give you insights on salary in a variety of fields. These applications are just the beginning. For a complete list you can use the Facebook Application Search and filter via jobs or resumes and see for yourself what beneficial applications you have been missing!
Since, Mark Zuckerburg is getting paid handsomely I suggest you let him and the Facebook team help you succeed in your own job search.

Resume Mistakes to Avoid
Jul 30th
Your resume is typically the first thing an employer or recruiter reviews so it is not surprising that preparing your resume can be one of the most important steps in the job application process. Your resume is also the way you market yourself. Paying attention to detail will help send the clear message as to why you are worth talking to you about the job.
There are several commonly made resume mistakes all job seekers should avoid.
- Grammar and spelling errors
- Not tailoring a resume for each job
- Including too many personal details and “fluff”
- Poor design or layout
Granted, there are tools to catch basic errors such as punctuation and spelling, but there aren’t any systems in place for other common errors.
Here are 4 major errors to keep a cautious eye on.
- Subjective text – Don’t tell recruiters how you see yourself. Prove it. List facts stating quantifiable accomplishments.
- Too much information - Information overload to a recruiter is not a way to stand out. Simplify the resume to list only the key skills you want to leverage
- Week top-fold - The first third of our resume is known as the “top-fold” – it’s where the eye goes when someone sees your resume for the first time. Text-intensive top-folds that aren’t well-formatted and don’t present key skill sets lose the reader’s attention.
- Fancy Fonts – Fancy (curly fonts) are harder to read. You are actually making it harder for the hiring manager to absorb your resume. Fancy design or layout done tastefully is a plus, but try to avoid fancy fonts.
One way to avoid these mistakes is to create multiple resumes. It allows you to refrain from putting on too much clutter and the hiring manager can see a clear purpose. The “one size fits all” mantra for resumes does not pay off. You need to focus only on one specialization, because it keeps the resume simple, but effective.

How to Effectively Use Your Professional Profile
Jul 23rd
It is no secret companies today look at professional online profiles. LinkedIn is the primary professional networking site, but that doesn’t mean you should neglect your other online profiles. It is up to you to update and maintain a current and professional profile. Some tips to optimize your online profile for potential employers are listed below.
- Keep it up to date – whenever you have an update, post it.
- Refresh your keywords and specialties – search online for common words that best describe what you do and use these key words organically.
- Be aware – create multiple online profiles and a personal blog and make sure they are all connected to enhance your personal search rankings.
- Get the recognition you deserve – all legitimate recognitions should be included in your profiles.

It is important to note recruiters are constantly seeking out passive job candidates for their highly selective corporate clients. Once you know and understand the methods recruiters utilize in their hunt, you can position yourself as the talented passive candidate they covet.
Here are four tactics recruiters use on LinkedIn specifically.
- Recruiters look for people who use the same vocabulary as their clients.
- Recruiters hunt for people who command the respect of their peers and supervisors.
- Recruiters seek experts and thought leaders.
- Recruiters scout for people wherever they can find them.
There are many other strategies you can successfully employ, but these four provide the basis to create a solid LinkedIn presence. Good luck with your job hunt!

The Difference Between Us and Them
Aug 5th
When you get a call from a recruiter regarding your resume and experience what is your first thought on scheduling an interview with them?
- I have never interviewed with a recruiter before. What do I wear? Should I bring a copy of my resume?
- This should be a casual interview
- I’ve had great experiences with recruiting firms and can’t wait to interview for this position. Oh, the options!
Whether you have interviewed with a recruiter or not, it is important to remember that you are interviewing for a job!
You may not think working with a recruiter is as close, or directly connected to a job as it may be when you’re interviewing with a hiring manager. However, our recruiters have strong, trusting relationships with their clients (your next potential employer!)
Think of your recruiter as a reference, connection, your networking guru.
Treat the interview as you would any other. Be professional, bring a copy of your resume, and be sure to follow up.

Stay Connected Even When You Love Your Job!
Jun 20th
Have you ever been contacted by a recruiter while at work? Did you turn the call away because you were happy where you were?
Although you may love your current job and are not active in the market, do not assume that what the recruiter has in store for you now (or in the future) won’t be the job of your dreams – or the dream job of one of your friends. (We have a great referral program!)
Here are some reasons why you should take the recruiter’s call:
- Nothing Is Official – Yet!
- While the recruiter might be calling you for a potential opportunity nothing is set in stone. Take time to listen to what the job has to offer. If it’s not for you it may be a good fit for someone you know.
- Stay Active While Inactive
- Even though you are currently happy where you are it is still beneficial to update your knowledge of the job market within your industry of interest while you’re not searching. You never know when you will desire a change or need to find another job in a hurry.
- Build Relationships
- Building relationships and networking can only help you in the future. Practice staying in touch and following up! Keep your recruiter in the loop and they will continue to contact you in return.
Do not shy away from new opportunities and relationships just because you are happy at the present time. Change is inevitable and nothing is permanent. Take the call!
